January Declutter 2026 — Where Everything Goes

January is the busiest declutter month of the year in Scotland — Christmas storage, Boxing Day sales replacements and the new-year reset. Here's where everything goes and how long each route takes in 2026.

Christmas tree

• Real trees — local council collection runs first 2 weeks of January (or our collection from £15)
• Artificial trees — if reusable, donate to a charity shop or sell on Marketplace; if broken, our bulky uplift takes them

Old gifts and replacement items

• Old electricals replaced by Christmas gifts — WEEE recycling required (council recycling centre or our appliance collection)
• Old clothes replaced by new — charity shops are accepting again from 2nd Jan
• Old furniture replaced by new — BHF, SACRO or private clearance

Christmas decorations

• Working strings of lights — donate via Facebook community groups
• Broken lights — small electricals recycling at council centre
• Broken ornaments — domestic waste
• Old wreaths — composted (council green or our garden uplift)

The boxes you've been moving around for years. January is when the mental space exists to actually open them. The shortcut: if you haven't opened the box in 2 years, you don't need 95% of what's inside. Set aside paperwork, photos, anything personal — bin or recycle the rest.
