Glasgow City Council operates four Household Waste Recycling Centres. No booking is required if you are arriving by car. All four sites are open Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6pm (last entry 5:45pm). You must be a Glasgow City Council resident to use these sites.

East Dunbartonshire Council operates a single recycling centre at Mavis Valley in Bishopbriggs. Hours change between summer and winter, so check before you go.

• The last hour is cars only — no vans or trailers allowed during the final 60 minutes.
• Closed 25–26 December and 1–2 January.
• This is the only centre for the whole of East Dunbartonshire, so it gets busy. Avoid Saturday mornings if possible.

North Lanarkshire Council has six recycling centres spread across its area. No booking is required. Standard opening hours apply at most sites, with Shotts being the exception.

South Lanarkshire is the council area where you must book a slot in advance. No booking, no entry. You will also need to bring proof of address. Book online at southlanarkshire.gov.uk/book-a-slot or call 0303 123 1020.

Renfrewshire Council operates five recycling centres, all open 7 days a week, 8am to 6pm (last entry 5:45pm). You will need to bring ID proving your Renfrewshire address. Vans and trailers are only accepted at Linwood, and you need a permit.

East Renfrewshire Council requires booking at both of its recycling centres. Book through the East Renfrewshire Council website. Note the different rules on van and trailer access at each site.

• Barrhead does not accept vans or trailers at all.
• Greenhags (Newton Mearns) does accept vans and trailers.
• Note the slightly unusual Sunday closing time at Greenhags: 4:10pm.

West Dunbartonshire operates two recycling centres with seasonal opening hours. Vans and trailers need 24-hour advance booking and are limited to a maximum of 4 visits per year.

• Last entry is 15 minutes before closing.
• Vans and trailers: book 24 hours in advance, maximum 4 visits per year.
• Cars do not need to book.

What Recycling Centres Accept

While every council has slightly different rules, the following items are accepted at most recycling centres across the Glasgow area:

What Recycling Centres Do NOT Accept

This is where people get caught out. The following items are refused at most or all recycling centres in the Glasgow area:

• Asbestos — requires specialist licensed removal. Do not attempt to transport it yourself.
• Commercial or trade waste — these centres are for household waste only. If you are a business, you need a licensed commercial waste removal service.
• Large quantities of rubble or construction waste — small amounts of DIY rubble are usually fine, but anything from a building project will be refused.
• Tyres — most centres do not accept these. Contact your local tyre fitter for disposal.
• Gas bottles and cylinders — return these to the supplier or a specialist dealer.
• Clinical or medical waste — contact your GP surgery or local pharmacy for sharps bins and medical waste.
• Explosives, fireworks and ammunition — contact Police Scotland.
• Large industrial machinery — not classed as household waste.

Essential Tips Before You Visit

1. Bring Proof of Address

Several councils (South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire) require ID. A utility bill, council tax letter or driving licence with your current address will do. Without it, you may be turned away.

2. Check Van and Trailer Rules First

Almost every council has restrictions on larger vehicles. Some ban them entirely, others require permits or advance booking. If you are hiring a van for the day, check the rules for your destination centre before you load up. Many people discover the restriction only when they reach the gate.

3. Book Where Required

South Lanarkshire and East Renfrewshire both require booking. West Dunbartonshire requires booking for vans and trailers. Turning up without a booking wastes your time and everyone else's.

4. Go at Quieter Times

The busiest times across all centres are Saturday mornings between 9am and noon. Weekday afternoons are almost always quieter. If the centre opens at 7am or 8am, the first hour is often quiet too.

5. Sort Your Load Before You Go

Recycling centres have separate skips and containers for different materials. If you sort your load at home — wood in one pile, metal in another, general waste separate — you will be in and out in half the time.

6. Watch for Seasonal Closures

Most centres close over Christmas and New Year (typically 25–26 December and 1–2 January). Some reduce hours in winter. Check your council's website if you are planning a visit around a bank holiday.

7. Wear Appropriate Clothing
