How to Dispose of Engine Oil Legally in Glasgow

Used engine oil is classed as hazardous waste under Scottish environmental law. Pouring it down a drain, into the ground or into a wheelie bin can land you a fine of up to £20,000 — and the contamination it causes is real. The good news: legal disposal in Glasgow is free, and there are several routes.

Free oil banks at Glasgow recycling centres

Every one of Glasgow City Council's four Household Waste Recycling Centres accepts used engine oil and oil filters free of charge:

• Polmadie HWRC — Shawfield Drive, G5 0RA
• Easter Queenslie HWRC — Easter Queenslie Road, G33 4LD
• Shieldhall HWRC — Bogmoor Road, G51 4SE
• Dawsholm HWRC — Dalsholm Road, G20 0TB

Maximum 25 litres per visit. Bring oil in a sealed container — the centre will not accept open or leaking containers. They have separate bays for engine oil, hydraulic oil and oil filters.

Garages that take customer oil

Many independent garages and Halfords branches in Glasgow will accept up to 5 litres of used engine oil from customers, free of charge, even if you didn't do the oil change with them. Phone first — it's discretionary.

Cooking oil is different

Used cooking oil is not the same as engine oil. Glasgow's recycling centres do not accept it in the engine oil bay. Small amounts (under 5 litres) go to general waste; larger volumes go to a commercial cooking-oil collector. Don't pour either down the sink — they cause fatbergs in the sewage system.

What about diesel, petrol and antifreeze?

• Diesel and petrol — accepted at Glasgow HWRC fuel banks (smaller volumes only)
• Antifreeze — accepted as hazardous waste at HWRC chemical bays
• Brake fluid and power steering fluid — accepted at HWRC chemical bays
• Empty oil cans (drained) — go in the metal recycling bay

Oil filters

Used oil filters are heavy with residual oil and steel. They are accepted at HWRC oil bays — the metal is recycled separately from the oil.

What if I have 50+ litres?

For volumes above 25 litres (e.g. workshop clearances, end-of-life vehicle drains, or a long-term garage hoarder collection), HWRC won't handle it in one drop. Options:

1. Multiple visits over several days
2. Specialist hazardous waste collectors — typical cost £80–£150 for 200 litres
3. Our team can dispose of small workshop quantities as part of a wider garage clearance via licensed hazardous-waste partners

Penalties for illegal oil disposal

Pouring oil onto the ground, into a drain or into a wheelie bin is a criminal offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Penalties:

• Fixed penalty notice: £200
• Magistrates court fine: up to £20,000
• Plus clean-up cost — for soil contamination this can run to several thousand pounds
