How to Dispose of Glass in Glasgow

Not all glass goes in the same place. Bottles and jars are recycled at the bottle bank or in your green/blue bin. Window glass, mirrors, Pyrex and drinking glasses are not. Here's the breakdown for Glasgow in 2026.

What goes in Glasgow's glass recycling

Wine, beer and spirit bottles (any colour)
Jam jars, sauce jars, baby food jars (lids removed)
Olive oil and vinegar bottles
Perfume and aftershave bottles (empty, plastic pump removed)

These all go in your green bin or local bottle bank. Glasgow City Council's green bin is collected fortnightly.

What does NOT go in glass recycling

These are different glass formulations and contaminate the bottle stream:

Window glass and panes
Mirrors
Pyrex and ovenproof glass
Drinking glasses, wine glasses, tumblers
Light bulbs (separate WEEE route)
Crystal
Ceramics, china, pottery
Spectacle and prescription glasses (donate at opticians)

These all go to HWRC general waste or the specific stream noted below.

Bottle banks across Glasgow

Bottle banks are located at most major Glasgow supermarkets — Tesco Extra, ASDA, Sainsbury's and Morrisons all host them. They're typically split by colour: clear, brown, green. Putting wrong-colour glass in the wrong slot doesn't cause a problem (it's sorted again at the recycling facility) but slot by colour where you can.

Window and pane glass

Replacement windows, broken panes and glass from picture frames are different formulations from bottle glass. They go to:

Glasgow HWRC — separate window-glass skip at most sites
Wrap broken glass in 2–3 layers of newspaper, label "BROKEN GLASS"
For full window replacements, your double-glazing installer should take the old units away — most reputable Glasgow installers include this

Mirrors

Mirrors have a metallic backing layer that contaminates window-glass recycling. They go in HWRC general waste, not the glass bay. Wrap thoroughly first.

Pyrex and ovenproof glass

Pyrex (borosilicate) is heat-resistant glass with a different melting point from container glass. It cannot be mixed in. Pyrex goes in HWRC general waste. Donate intact pieces to charity shops first — they sell well.

Drinking glasses

Wine glasses, tumblers, pint glasses are made from soda-lime glass with different additives from bottles. They contaminate the bottle stream. Donate to charity shops if intact; HWRC general waste otherwise.
