How to Dispose of Paint in Glasgow
Liquid paint can't go in your wheelie bin or your skip. Wet paint is hazardous waste and disposal is regulated by SEPA. Dried, hardened paint is much easier to deal with. Here's how to handle every state in 2026.
The two states of paint
- Liquid (in the tin) — counts as hazardous waste. Goes to HWRC paint bay or a hazardous waste collection
- Dried solid (after hardener or air-drying) — counts as general waste. Goes in the wheelie bin or skip
The single most useful trick for paint disposal is hardening leftover paint. Pour sawdust, cat litter or a paint hardener product into the tin, stir, leave the lid off for 24–48 hours. The paint sets solid and you can throw the tin in general waste.
Glasgow HWRC paint disposal
All four Glasgow HWRC sites have a paint disposal bay:
- Polmadie HWRC, G5 0RA
- Easter Queenslie HWRC, G33 4LD
- Shieldhall HWRC, G51 4SE
- Dawsholm HWRC, G20 0TB
Bring tins with lids on. They accept water-based (emulsion, masonry, gloss water-based) and oil-based (gloss, undercoat, primer) — but in separate bays. Maximum quantity per visit varies by site; call ahead for 20+ litres.
Community RePaint Glasgow
Community RePaint is a UK-wide network that takes leftover usable paint and redistributes it to community projects. Glasgow has active drop-off points at:
- Some Glasgow charity shops (varies by month)
- Community RePaint events held by Glasgow City Council
- Specific community centres in the East End
Visit communityrepaint.org.uk for current Glasgow drop-off locations. Paint must be unmixed, in original tin, with at least one third remaining, in usable condition.
What counts as oil-based vs water-based?
Read the tin. Cleaning instructions are the giveaway:
- "Wash brushes in water" — water-based (emulsion, water-based gloss, masonry)
- "Wash brushes in white spirit" — oil-based (traditional gloss, undercoat, oil primer, varnish)
Mixing them up at HWRC is fine — staff direct you to the right bay — but they need to be tin-clean of contaminants like white spirit.
Empty tins
Empty (or scraped-empty) metal paint tins can go in HWRC scrap metal recycling. Empty plastic tins go in plastic recycling at HWRC. Tins with even a thin coating of dried paint are still recyclable as the foundry burns it off.
Trade and decorator quantities
For decorators and small builders disposing of >50 litres of leftover paint at the end of a job, HWRC is too small a route. Options:
- Hazardous waste collector — typical cost £80–£150 for a barrel
- Our builders waste service takes paint as part of strip-out / refit clearance
- Some big-box stores (Wickes, B&Q) participate in trade paint take-back at certain times
Avoid the £20,000 fine
Pouring paint down a drain, into the soil or into a watercourse is a criminal offence in Scotland. SEPA prosecutes — the fine can reach £20,000 plus clean-up cost. Even one tin of emulsion poured down an outside drain runs into the storm water system and ends up in the Clyde. Don't do it.
